The spine of the page
Nine jobs, in the order merchants ask for them.
Ranked by how often the job appears across the ranking guides and in merchant forums this year. For each: what the merchant actually asks for, what a tool reads and writes, how the write is approved and undone, the price model, named tools with dated sources, and where Vortex IQ fits if it does. Where we do not do the job, we say so.
Job 1Customer support and pre-purchase questions
"Answering the same six questions forever, and losing the people who ask them at 2am." The most common job on every list and in every merchant thread. The hidden question is what the bill looks like in November.
- Reads
- Order status, returns policy, product data, conversation history.
- Writes to the store
- Replies to customers; on Shopify, order actions such as refunds, returns and address edits inside the conversation.
- Who approves
- Varies by vendor. Gorgias AI Agent and Klaviyo Customer Agent act within guardrails you set and can require confirmation per action; Shopify Inbox suggests replies; Fin and others offer human handover.
- How it is undone
- A sent message cannot be unsent. Order actions are reversible only through the platform's own order tools. No vendor documents an undo for agent messages.
- Price model
- Per resolved conversation (Gorgias about $1.00, third-party figure), per conversation bundle (Klaviyo Customer Agent, $700 for 1,000 shown with a discount), or included (Shopify Inbox). Peak-season volume multiplies per-resolution bills.
Vortex IQ does not do this job. Use a specialist; the crews can read the results through connectors where a workflow needs them.
Job 2Catalogue and product content at scale
"Rewriting supplier titles into something readable", tags, meta descriptions and alt text across thousands of SKUs. Merchants are explicit about the failure mode: "bulk-editing a catalog blind is how you end up with 400 products that all say the same thing." They want preview, approve, apply.
- Reads
- Product catalogue, variants, images, existing metadata, search data.
- Writes to the store
- Titles, descriptions, tags, meta fields, alt text, structured data. This is the job where a bad write is most visible.
- Who approves
- Shopify Magic and Sidekick present changes for review; bulk-generation apps often apply directly (test on 20 to 50 products first); Vortex IQ's Beacon crew prepares proposals and nothing publishes without your specialist's review.
- How it is undone
- Sidekick theme edits need manual save; product edits rely on your own export. Vortex IQ ships approved content through Store Development with a RollbackPro undo point on BigCommerce today.
- Price model
- Included (Magic), per-app subscriptions from about $20 a month, or part of a platform plan.
Where Vortex IQ fits: SEO and AI Visibility, the Beacon crew. Proposes titles, descriptions, structured data and briefs at catalogue scale in your brand voice; your specialist reviews; approved content ships through the content lane.
Scope: Reads on Shopify, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce and WooCommerce. Publishing available now on BigCommerce, on request elsewhere. Job 3Analytics turned into actions
"If AI could tell you exactly what to improve each week, would you use it?" Merchants say they "struggle to turn analytics into actual decisions" and want tools that "find issues" rather than wait for a prompt.
- Reads
- Orders, sessions, ad spend, search data, page speed, connector health.
- Writes to the store
- Usually nothing. Findings, alerts and reports. The exception is a workforce that hands a finding to a fix lane.
- Who approves
- Not applicable for reports. Where a finding becomes a change, the approval model of the fix lane applies.
- How it is undone
- Not applicable for reports.
- Price model
- From about $45 a month for reporting apps to GMV-scaled plans (Triple Whale Foundation from $219 a month, third-party figure).
Where Vortex IQ fits: Store Health, the Pulse crew. Scans the store on a schedule, writes each issue as a ticket with evidence, revenue estimate and the exact change, and has a verifier try to disprove it before you see it. A daily money check raises alerts.
Scope: Shopify, BigCommerce and Adobe Commerce today; WooCommerce on request. Pulse never applies anything. Job 4SEO and AI visibility
Content that actually ranks ("raw AI content almost never ranks well on its own") and being cited when a shopper asks ChatGPT or Gemini. Practitioners already test "15 real buyer prompts across platforms monthly".
- Reads
- Pages, catalogue, Search Console, structured data, crawler access, feeds.
- Writes to the store
- Metadata, structured data, llms.txt, content drafts, feed fields.
- Who approves
- Content tools draft; a person publishes. Vortex IQ's Beacon prepares and routes to your specialist; nothing publishes without review.
- How it is undone
- Content lane rollback where the platform supports it (BigCommerce today). Otherwise your CMS history.
- Price model
- Per seat (Surfer, Jasper), per app (Shopify SEO apps from free to about $30 a month), or part of a platform plan.
Where Vortex IQ fits: SEO and AI Visibility, the Beacon crew. Nine SEO steps and three GEO steps across the catalogue, an AI readiness check of what assistants can see, proposals your specialist reviews. Readiness improves the odds of a citation; nobody can promise one.
Scope: Reads on all four platforms; publishing on BigCommerce now, on request elsewhere. Job 5Search, recommendations, bundles and upsell
Which products "genuinely sell together, and what discount levels preserve margins", described by one merchant as "the 11pm Sunday job". The fear is that upsell raises order value and "hurts conversion", so they test on one collection first.
- Reads
- Orders, browsing behaviour, catalogue, margins.
- Writes to the store
- On-site search results, recommendation blocks, bundle offers, discounts.
- Who approves
- Mostly rule configuration by the merchant; the tool then runs automatically. Few vendors document a per-change approval.
- How it is undone
- Switch the rule off. No vendor documents a restore point.
- Price model
- Per app, often by traffic or revenue tier.
Vortex IQ does not do this job. Use a specialist; the crews can read the results through connectors where a workflow needs them.
Job 6Email, SMS and lifecycle marketing
Campaign and flow drafting without a copywriter on call. This job appears on every list and rarely in merchant threads, which suggests it is largely solved.
- Reads
- Customer profiles, events, orders.
- Writes to the store
- Campaigns, flows, segments, messages.
- Who approves
- Klaviyo Composer: "Nothing goes live without you." Check the same for any other vendor before connecting a list.
- How it is undone
- "You cannot unsend a broadcast." Approval before send is the only undo.
- Price model
- By active profiles (Klaviyo paid plans from about $45 a month) plus metered agent usage.
Vortex IQ does not do this job. Use a specialist; the crews can read the results through connectors where a workflow needs them.
Job 7Paid media and budget decisions
"Spend is drifting and nobody has time to audit every campaign." And the reverse fear: an agent that moves budgets on its own.
- Reads
- Meta and Google Ads accounts, store orders for a cross-channel view.
- Writes to the store
- Budgets, campaign status, creative, audiences.
- Who approves
- Triple Whale Moby 2 defaults to recommend-then-approve and can be given authority within guardrails. Vortex IQ's Compass crew applies Meta Ads changes only behind approval and a verified-and-confirmed gate.
- How it is undone
- Compass keeps a rollback on each governed write. Triple Whale does not document an undo for ad actions.
- Price model
- GMV-scaled (Triple Whale Automate from $749 a month, third-party figure) or part of a platform plan.
Where Vortex IQ fits: Ads Performance, the Compass crew. Reads Meta Ads live, runs eight optimiser rules and six cross-channel diagnoses with store data, and turns each recommendation into a finding with the numbers behind it. Governed writes behind approval with rollback.
Scope: Meta Ads today; Google Ads on request. No spend or return figure is promised. Job 8Product imagery and creative
Clean product images and ad variants without a studio day.
- Reads
- Product images, brand assets.
- Writes to the store
- New image files you upload or the tool publishes to the catalogue.
- Who approves
- You choose which images to use. Check whether an app writes directly to the catalogue.
- How it is undone
- Keep originals. Image replacements on a product are not versioned by most platforms.
- Price model
- Per image or per seat (Photoroom, Runway); Shopify Magic image editing is included.
Vortex IQ does not do this job. Use a specialist; the crews can read the results through connectors where a workflow needs them.
Job 9Operations safety: fixes, staging, backup and rollback
Absent from every ranking listicle and present in every serious merchant thread: "verify the screen yourself before saving anything", "read-only default, hard ceilings, irreversible actions stop at draft, audit trail". Google's own AI Mode asks "best backup tools for AI-driven ecommerce changes".
- Reads
- The whole store, so that a change can be checked before and after.
- Writes to the store
- Settings, content, theme code, restores. The job is making those writes safe.
- Who approves
- Human approval by default, per write, with a named approver. Bounded automation only inside an agreed scope.
- How it is undone
- Restore points per change (RollbackPro on BigCommerce and Shopify), staging copies (StagingPro, Vortex Staging, DryRunPro), independent point-in-time backup (Rewind, 365-day history).
- Price model
- Rewind from $19 a month (Shopify) or $45 a month (BigCommerce); Vortex IQ from $399 a month billed annually with the crews included.
Where Vortex IQ fits: Store Development (CodeCraft) and Migration and Recovery (Bridge). Every crew's finding becomes one named outcome: applied with an undo point, a pull request, or guided steps. A separate review crew challenges each fix. Bridge keeps the restore points and the change history.
Scope: API and content writes with an undo point on BigCommerce today, on request on Shopify, Adobe Commerce and WooCommerce; pull requests on any platform with a theme repository.
